# Level Heh, Heh 3: Advanced listening and discussion Lesson page with audio: https://hebrew-course.pages.dev/#/unit/heh-3 You can now analyze complex texts and write with precision. This unit develops the corresponding spoken skills: following extended speech, understanding implied meaning, expressing qualifications, and responding effectively when a discussion changes direction. You will practice lectures, interviews, disagreements, negotiations, and explanations for different audiences. By the end, you should be able to participate in a demanding discussion while tracking both the information being exchanged and the relationships between speakers. All scripts and situations in this unit are original learning examples. For listening practice, have someone read the scripts aloud or use a suitable spoken recording. Reading a transcript alone does not practice recognizing speech. ### 1. Listen on three levels Advanced listening involves more than recognizing words. Track three levels: | Level | Main question | |---|---| | Content | What is being said? | | Structure | How does this point connect to the discussion? | | Interaction | What is the speaker doing socially? | Consider: **אני מבינה למה ההצעה נראית יעילה. השאלה היא אם בדקנו את ההשלכות שלה.** I understand why the proposal appears efficient. The question is whether we have examined its consequences. Content: - The proposal appears efficient. - Its consequences may not have been examined. Structure: - Acknowledgment followed by a challenge. Interaction: - The speaker raises an objection without directly dismissing the proposal. Try to hear all three levels together. ### 2. Set a listening purpose Before listening, decide what you need. For a lecture: - Main argument. - Definitions. - Evidence or examples. - Qualifications. - Conclusion. For a meeting: - Positions. - Decisions. - Responsibilities. - Deadlines. - Open questions. For an interview: - What the speaker claims. - What supports the claim. - What remains unanswered. Your notes should reflect the task. You do not need to transcribe everything. ### 3. Recognize the structure of extended speech Speakers often announce how their ideas fit together. | Hebrew expression | Function | |---|---| | ראשית, חשוב להבחין בין… | Introduces a distinction | | נחזור לרגע לשאלה המרכזית. | Returns to the main question | | הנקודה שאני מנסה להדגיש היא… | Highlights the central point | | עד כאן דיברנו על… | Summarizes the previous section | | מכאן אפשר לעבור ל… | Introduces the next section | | לפני שאסיים, אוסיף הסתייגות. | Introduces a final qualification | | אין להסיק מכך ש… | Limits a possible inference | When you hear these expressions, prioritize what follows. A speaker may spend several minutes on an example. Recognize when they return to the argument: **הדוגמה הזאת ממחישה את הבעיה, אבל נחזור עכשיו לעיקרון.** This example illustrates the problem, but let us now return to the principle. ### 4. Take notes by function Use short labels: - **שאלה:** Question. These notes preserve the reasoning without reproducing every sentence. ### 5. Understand corrections and unfinished speech Natural speech contains restarts: **אני לא חושב שצריך לבטל את… כלומר, לבטל לגמרי את האפשרות.** The speaker begins broadly, then narrows the point. Or: **הבעיה היא המחיר—בעצם, לא רק המחיר, גם הזמן שנדרש.** The problem is the price—actually, not only the price, also the time required. Track the final position rather than treating the first formulation as definitive. Ask yourself: - Was the speaker correcting a fact? - Narrowing a claim? - Adding another factor? - Searching for a word? - Changing their position? ### 6. Clarify precisely A general **לא הבנתי**, “I didn’t understand,” is useful. At an advanced level, identify the part that is unclear. **כשאתה אומר “יעיל”, אתה מתכוון לחיסכון בזמן או בעלויות?** When you say “efficient,” do you mean saving time or costs? **לא ברור לי אם זו המלצה או החלטה שכבר התקבלה.** I am not clear whether this is a recommendation or a decision already made. **האם הדוגמה נועדה להמחיש את הטענה או לבסס אותה?** Is the example intended to illustrate the claim or support it? **פספסתי את הקשר בין שתי הנקודות. תוכל להסביר אותו שוב?** I missed the connection between the two points. Could you explain it again? A targeted question helps the speaker answer efficiently. ### 7. Express degrees of certainty Use language that matches your confidence. | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | אני משוכנע ש…, אני משוכנעת ש… | I am convinced that… | | להערכתי… | In my assessment… | | סביר ש… | It is likely that… | | ייתכן ש… | It is possible that… | | קשה לקבוע בשלב זה. | It is difficult to determine at this stage. | | אין לי מספיק מידע כדי להכריע. | I do not have enough information to decide. | You can separate confidence in different parts of a position: **אני משוכנעת שיש בעיה בנגישות. לגבי הפתרון המוצע, אני עדיין לא בטוחה.** I am convinced there is an accessibility problem. As for the proposed solution, I am not yet sure. Or: **הנתון עצמו ברור. הפרשנות שלו עדיין פתוחה לדיון.** The figure itself is clear. Its interpretation is still open to discussion. This lets you participate without overstating your knowledge. ### 8. Disagree with the actual claim Before responding, identify what the other person has and has not said. Speaker A: **צריך לבדוק אפשרות לצמצם את מספר המפגשים.** We should examine the possibility of reducing the number of meetings. An inaccurate response: **אז אתה רוצה לבטל את הקורס?** So you want to cancel the course? A more accurate response: **אתה מציע לבדוק צמצום במספר המפגשים, בלי לשנות בהכרח את היקף הלימוד?** Are you proposing examining fewer meetings without necessarily changing the total amount of instruction? Then respond: **אם זו הכוונה, כדאי לבדוק גם איך מפגשים ארוכים יותר ישפיעו על המשתתפים.** If that is what you mean, we should also examine how longer sessions would affect participants. Clarification prevents disagreement with an exaggerated version of the position. ### 9. Separate a proposal’s dimensions You may agree on one dimension and disagree on another. **אני מסכים עם המטרה, אבל לא בטוח שהאמצעי מתאים.** I agree with the goal, but I am not sure the means are appropriate. **ההצעה אפשרית מבחינה טכנית, אבל עדיין לא בדקנו את העלות.** The proposal is technically feasible, but we have not yet examined the cost. **הפתרון מתאים לטווח הקצר. השאלה היא אם נוכל להמשיך בו לאורך זמן.** The solution suits the short term. The question is whether we can sustain it. Useful distinctions: - **מטרה, אמצעי:** Goal / means. - **עיקרון, יישום:** Principle / implementation. - **אפשרות, כדאיות:** Feasibility / whether it is worthwhile. - **טווח קצר, טווח ארוך:** Short term / long term. - **מקרה מסוים, כלל המקרים:** A particular case / all cases. These distinctions make disagreement more precise. ### 10. Recognize indirect requests A speaker may express a request through a question or observation. **אולי כדאי שנשמע גם את מי שעוד לא דיבר.** Perhaps we should also hear from those who have not spoken. This may function as a request to redistribute speaking time. **נשארו לנו רק עשר דקות.** We have only ten minutes left. Depending on context, this may suggest: - Be brief. - Return to the agenda. - Decide what to postpone. **המסמך עדיין לא הגיע אליי.** The document has not reached me yet. This may be a status report or an indirect request to send it. Do not assume a hidden meaning automatically. Use context, tone, and the relationship between speakers. ### 11. Understatement, irony, and sarcasm Literal meaning may differ from intended meaning. After a difficult process, someone says: **זה היה קצת יותר מסובך ממה שחשבנו.** It was a little more complicated than we thought. The phrase **קצת יותר** may understate a substantial difficulty. After a long delay: **ממש יעיל.** Very efficient. The speaker may be sincere or sarcastic. Tone and circumstances matter. To check without escalating: **את אומרת את זה ברצינות, או שיש כאן ביקורת על התהליך?** Are you saying that seriously, or are you criticizing the process? Or respond to the practical concern: **נראה שהתהליך היה מתסכל. מה היה החלק הבעייתי ביותר?** It sounds as though the process was frustrating. What was the most problematic part? Your goal is to understand the interaction, not to imitate sarcasm before you can control its effect. ### 12. Manage turn-taking Useful expressions: **אפשר להוסיף משפט לפני שנעבור הלאה?** May I add one sentence before we move on? **אני רוצה לשמוע גם את דעתה של יעל.** I would also like to hear Yael’s opinion. **אם הבנתי נכון, דניאל עדיין לא סיים את ההסבר.** If I understood correctly, Daniel has not yet finished explaining. **אענה בקצרה, ואז אחזור לשאלה שלך.** I will answer briefly and then return to your question. **יש כאן שתי שאלות. באיזו מהן נתחיל?** There are two questions here. Which should we begin with? If interrupted: **רק אשלים את הנקודה, ואז אשמח להתייחס.** I will just finish the point, and then I will be glad to respond. Use tone and timing to keep the exchange cooperative. ### 13. Explain specialist material to a general audience Begin with the problem or purpose before introducing terminology. Less accessible: **המערכת מבצעת תעדוף אוטומטי על בסיס כמה פרמטרים.** The system performs automatic prioritization based on several parameters. More accessible: **המערכת קובעת איזו בקשה תטופל קודם. היא עושה זאת לפי כמה כללים, למשל מועד ההגשה ורמת הדחיפות.** The system determines which request will be handled first. It does this according to several rules, such as submission time and urgency. Then introduce the term: **לתהליך הזה קוראים תעדוף.** This process is called prioritization. A useful explanation includes: 1. Purpose. 2. Plain-language description. 3. Concrete example. 4. Technical term, if needed. 5. Important limitation. Check understanding with a specific question rather than only **הכול ברור?** For example: **בדוגמה הזאת, איזו בקשה לדעתך תטופל ראשונה?** In this example, which request do you think would be handled first? ### 14. Lecture listening script Have someone read the following aloud. On the first listen, note only the main question and conclusion. - **מצומצם:** Limited; small in scope. - **תצפיות:** Observations. - **שיקול דעת:** Judgment. Second-listen questions: 1. Which three concepts does the speaker distinguish? 2. Why can a formally available service remain difficult to use? 3. Why does attendance not fully measure quality? 4. Why might low usage fail to establish that a service is unnecessary? 5. Does the speaker reject numerical information? 6. What should happen before choosing measures? ### 15. Reconstruct the lecture After listening, explain the argument without following the wording sentence by sentence. A possible structure: **ההרצאה מבחינה בין זמינות, נגישות ושימוש. הטענה המרכזית היא שאין מדד יחיד שעונה על כל השאלות. כדי לבחור מדדים מתאימים, צריך להגדיר תחילה את מטרת השירות. לאחר מכן יש לשלב מידע כמותי עם מידע על חוויות וחסמים.** Then add one qualification the speaker made. Compare your reconstruction with the script only after speaking. ### 16. Discussion script: reaching a workable agreement Read or listen to this fictional meeting. Questions: 1. What does Yael initially propose? 2. What is Daniel’s objection? 3. Does Daniel oppose any pilot? 4. How does Yael reframe the disagreement? 5. Which group does she want included? 6. What next steps are agreed? 7. What remains undecided? ### 17. Mediate a disagreement A mediator helps participants identify shared ground and the actual disagreement. Useful sequence: #### Shared goal **נראה שכולנו רוצים לאפשר ליותר אנשים להשתמש בשירות.** It seems we all want to enable more people to use the service. #### Different concerns **דניאל מדגיש את המשאבים, ומאיה חוששת מעיכוב ממושך.** Daniel emphasizes resources, and Maya is concerned about a prolonged delay. #### Decision question **השאלה כרגע היא מהו היקף הניסוי שאפשר להתחיל בו.** The question now is the scope of the pilot we can begin. #### Possible agreement **אולי אפשר להסכים על שלב מוגבל, עם מועד ברור לבדיקה מחדש.** Perhaps we can agree on a limited stage with a clear review date. Do not claim agreement before participants confirm it. ### 18. Summarize a discussion accurately A strong spoken summary separates: - Shared conclusions. - Disagreements. - Decisions. - Tasks. - Open questions. Example: **יש הסכמה שכדאי לבדוק הרחבה של שעות הפעילות. טרם הוחלט על מספר הערבים. לפני ההחלטה ייאסף מידע על העדפות המשתתפים ויוכן אומדן עלויות. נוסף על כך, הוסכם לפנות גם למי שאינם משתמשים כיום במרכז.** There is agreement that extended hours should be examined. The number of evenings has not yet been decided. Before that decision, preferences will be gathered and a cost estimate prepared. It was also agreed to approach people who do not currently use the center. Ask: **האם הסיכום הזה משקף את מה שהחלטנו?** Does this summary reflect what we decided? ### 19. Work with varied voices and listening conditions Increase difficulty gradually: - One clear speaker. - Two speakers. - Several speakers with orderly turns. - Interruptions and corrections. - Varied accents. - Telephone or audio-only speech. - Moderate background noise. If comprehension drops, identify the cause: - Unfamiliar vocabulary. - Speed. - Sound recognition. - Overlapping speech. - Missing context. - Unfamiliar references. Choose practice that addresses that cause. Replaying the entire recording repeatedly may be less useful than studying a short difficult passage. ### 20. A listening practice cycle Use a manageable segment. 1. Listen without a transcript. 2. State the main point in one sentence. 3. Listen again and note structure and details. 4. Mark what remains uncertain. 5. Check the transcript, if available. 6. Replay the difficult sections. 7. Summarize orally. 8. Respond with a question or evaluation. On a final listen, attend to phrasing, emphasis, and interaction rather than only vocabulary. ### 21. Practice A — Identify the speaker’s action What is the speaker doing? 1. אני מסכימה עם המטרה, אבל לא עם הדרך. 2. כשאתה אומר “הצלחה”, למה בדיוק אתה מתכוון? 3. זו לא בדיוק הטענה שלי. 4. אולי נשמע גם את מי שעוד לא דיבר. 5. אין לי מספיק מידע כדי להכריע. Choose from: - Clarifying. - Qualifying agreement. - Correcting a representation. - Managing participation. - Expressing uncertainty. ### 22. Practice B — Preserve the final position Summarize accurately: 1. **צריך לבטל את… בעצם, לצמצם את המפגשים הארוכים.** 2. **הבעיה היא המחיר. כלומר, המחיר ביחס למה שמקבלים.** 3. **אני מתנגד לשינוי, או יותר נכון, לאופן שבו מציעים לבצע אותו.** ### 23. Practice C — Ask a precise follow-up Write a follow-up question for each statement: 1. המתכונת הזאת יעילה יותר. 2. רוב המשתתפים מרוצים. 3. צריך לעשות את זה בקרוב. 4. אין מספיק משאבים. Your question should identify a specific uncertainty. ### 24. Practice D — Explain for a new audience Choose a concept from your work, studies, or interests. Explain it twice: - To someone familiar with the field. - To someone with no background. Keep the core meaning consistent. Adjust terminology, examples, and assumed knowledge. ### 25. Practice E — Respond to an objection Your proposal is criticized as too expensive. Respond by: 1. Restating the concern fairly. 2. Explaining what you know. 3. Acknowledging what is uncertain. 4. Offering a modification or next step. Do not invent a figure to make the response sound complete. ### 26. Practice F — Lead a discussion Choose a question with more than one reasonable position. Lead a ten- to fifteen-minute discussion. Your tasks: - State the question. - Invite different views. - Ask for reasons and examples. - Clarify one disagreement. - Bring in someone who has spoken less. - Summarize the discussion. - Confirm what remains unresolved. ### 27. Practice G — Authentic lecture or interview Choose an actual Hebrew lecture or interview of approximately ten minutes. Prepare: - A one-sentence main point. - A structured outline. - Three important details. - Two qualifications. - One point you did not fully understand. - Two questions for the speaker. Then give a three-minute oral summary without reading a full script. ### 28. Practice H — Advanced presentation Prepare an eight-minute presentation on a subject you know well. Include: - A clear question. - Necessary definitions. - A supported argument. - An example understandable to a general audience. - An alternative view. - A limitation. - A conclusion. Ask your audience to interrupt once for clarification and ask two questions afterward. ### Vocabulary pack Eight expressions for active use. Set your level for each one honestly: anything you mark joins your reviews on the Vocabulary page. #### Active vocabulary | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | How to use it | |---|---|---|---| | אין להסיק מכך ש… | eyn le-ha-**SIK** mi-**KAKH** she… | One should not conclude from this that… | Formal. Say that, in your assessment, the proposal is efficient. 2. Say that it is difficult to determine at this stage. 3. Say that one should not conclude from this that the program did not succeed. 4. Say that you agree with the goal, but not with the means. 5. You have been interrupted. Say that you’ll finish the point and then gladly respond. #### Hear and respond Listen without reading, then answer aloud. - **מה לדעתך היתרון בטווח הארוך?** - **מה עדיין לא ברור לך?** #### Review task Use your Heh 2 language too: summarize a discussion aloud with **חלק מהמשתתפים** and **לעומת זאת**, keeping the disagreement visible. #### Completion task Lead a short discussion of a real decision, or record yourself playing each side. State the goal and the means, give an assessment for the short and long term, and use at least four active expressions. ### Answer key **Lecture** 1. Availability, accessibility, and actual use. 2. Transport, registration, or other barriers may remain. 3. Attendance does not establish meaningful participation. 4. A small group may still have an important need. 5. No; the speaker argues for interpreting numbers according to their purpose and combining information. 6. Define the goal. **Discussion** 1. Two evenings each week. 2. Costs have not been fully estimated. 3. No; he proposes a smaller pilot. 4. As a question about the pilot’s scope and evaluation. 5. People who do not currently use the center. 6. Gather information about preferred days and prepare a cost estimate. 7. How many evenings to operate and the final pilot arrangement. **Practice A** 1. Qualifying agreement. 2. Clarifying. 3. Correcting a representation. 4. Managing participation. 5. Expressing uncertainty. **Practice B — Possible summaries** 1. The speaker proposes reducing long meetings, not necessarily canceling meetings entirely. 2. The concern is value relative to price, not price alone. 3. The objection concerns implementation rather than necessarily the change itself. **Practice C — Possible questions** 1. ### Heh completion project Investigate a complex subject using written and spoken Hebrew sources.
