# Level Bet, Bet 3: A connected everyday language system Lesson page with audio: https://hebrew-course.pages.dev/#/unit/bet-3 You can now talk about the present, past, and future. This unit brings those skills together so you can sustain conversations, compare options, explain problems, and express opinions with reasons. You will also begin recognizing how Hebrew words belong to families: verbs share patterns, nouns develop from roots, and related words help you understand unfamiliar language. By the end, you should be able to manage familiar situations with increasing independence and produce several connected paragraphs. ### 1. Moving between present, past, and future A useful conversation often moves between different times. **בעבר עבדתי במשרד. עכשיו אני עובד בבית. בשנה הבאה אעבוד בחברה אחרת.** In the past, I worked in an office. Now I work at home. Next year I will work at another company. *Male speaker.* Notice the three verb forms: | Time | Form | Meaning | |---|---|---| | Past | עבדתי | I worked | | Present | עובד | I work; I am working — Masculine | | Future | אעבוד | I will work | Another example: **אתמול קניתי ספר. עכשיו אני קוראת אותו. מחר אדבר עליו עם המורה.** Yesterday I bought a book. Now I am reading it. Tomorrow I will discuss it with the teacher. *Female speaker.* Learn: **עליו — a-LAV — about him; about it, masculine** The reference to the book stays consistent: - **ספר** — a book. - **אותו** — it, as a direct object. - **עליו** — about it. Before choosing a verb form, establish **who** is involved and **when** the action happens. ### 2. Planning a connected answer When someone asks a broad question, organize your answer around a few clear points. For example: **למה אתה לומד עברית?** Why are you learning Hebrew? — Addressing a man. A developed answer: **אני גר בישראל ורוצה לעבוד פה. בעבר דיברתי בעיקר אנגלית. עכשיו אני לומד עברית כל יום. בעתיד אני רוצה לדבר עברית גם בעבודה.** I live in Israel and want to work here. In the past, I mainly spoke English. Now I study Hebrew every day. In the future, I also want to speak Hebrew at work. New expressions: - **בעיקר — be-i-KAR:** Mainly. - **בעתיד — be-a-TID:** In the future. The answer connects a present situation, a past experience, current action, and a goal. ### 3. Recognizing the seven principal binyanim Hebrew verbs belong to recurring patterns called **בניינים — binyanim**. The pattern helps determine the verb’s forms. It can also suggest a relationship between meanings, but it does not give you a reliable translation by itself. Here is an introductory overview: | Binyan | Example | Meaning of the example | |---|---|---| | Paal / Qal — פעל | כתב | He wrote | | Nifal — נפעל | נכתב | It was written | | Piel — פיעל | סיפר | He told; recounted | | Pual — פועל | סופר | It was told; recounted | | Hifil — הפעיל | הזמין | He invited; ordered | | Hufal — הופעל | הוזמן | He was invited; it was ordered | | Hitpael — התפעל | התלבש | He got dressed | The forms above are past-tense examples. Unpointed spellings can have more than one reading, so learn each example with its pronunciation and context. Useful pronunciations: - **כתב — ka-TAV** - **נכתב — nikh-TAV** - **סיפר — si-PER** - **סופר — su-PAR**, in the passive example above. - **הזמין — hiz-MIN** - **הוזמן — huz-MAN** - **התלבש — hit-la-BESH** At Bet level, your goal is to recognize these families and use frequent examples. Systematic work with their full conjugations continues in Gimel. ### 4. Active and passive: who did it, or what happened? An active sentence focuses on someone performing an action. **דניאל כתב את המכתב.** Daniel wrote the letter. A passive sentence presents the letter as the thing affected: **המכתב נכתב אתמול.** The letter was written yesterday. Compare: | Active | Passive | |---|---| | דניאל כתב את המכתב. | המכתב נכתב. | | Daniel wrote the letter. | The letter was written. | | המורה סיפרה את הסיפור. | הסיפור סופר בכיתה. | | The teacher told the story. | The story was told in class. | | מאיה הזמינה את דניאל. | דניאל הוזמן. | | Maya invited Daniel. | Daniel was invited. | Passive forms are useful when: - The person responsible is unknown. - The person responsible is already understood. - The event or result matters more than the person. Do not assume that every Nifal verb is passive or that every active verb has a commonly used passive partner. For example: **נכנס — nikh-NAS — entered** This is a Nifal verb, but “entered” is not a passive action. ### 5. Hitpael: actions involving oneself or one another You already know: **התלבש — hit-la-BESH — got dressed** Some Hitpael verbs describe actions involving the person performing them: **הילד התרחץ.** The boy washed himself; took a bath. **התרחץ — hit-ra-KHETS** Other Hitpael verbs describe reciprocal activity: **מאיה ודניאל התכתבו.** Maya and Daniel corresponded; exchanged written messages. **התכתבו — hit-kat-VU** Compare: - **כתבתי מכתב.** — I wrote a letter. - **התכתבתי עם מאיה.** — I exchanged written messages with Maya. Learn: **להתכתב עם… — le-hit-ka-TEV im…** To correspond with someone. These meanings are useful patterns to notice. Learn the meaning and required prepositions of each verb individually. ### 6. Action nouns: talking about an activity as a thing A noun can name an activity. Compare: **אני אוהבת לקרוא.** I like reading. — Literally, “I like to read.” **קריאה חשובה לי.** Reading is important to me. In the second sentence, **קריאה** is a noun. | Verb | Action noun | Meaning of the noun | |---|---|---| | לקרוא — To read | קריאה — kri-**A** | Reading | | לכתוב — To write | כתיבה — kti-**VA** | Writing | | ללמוד — To study | לימוד — li-**MUD** | Learning; study | | לעבוד — To work | עבודה — a-vo-**DA** | Work; a job | | לדבר — To speak | דיבור — di-**BUR** | Speech; speaking | | לנסוע — To travel | נסיעה — ne-si-**A** | Travel; a journey | Examples: **אני רוצה לשפר את הקריאה שלי.** I want to improve my reading. **הכתיבה בעברית קשה לי.** Writing in Hebrew is difficult for me. **הנסיעה הייתה ארוכה.** The journey was long. New vocabulary: - **לשפר — le-sha-PER:** To improve. - **קשה — ka-SHE / ka-SHA:** Difficult, masculine / feminine. - **ארוך — a-ROKH:** Long, masculine. - **ארוכה — a-ru-KA:** Long, feminine. Notice that action nouns have grammatical gender and behave like other nouns. ### 7. Expanding smikhut: noun combinations Review: - **בית ספר** — A school. - **בית הספר** — The school. The first noun may change in a construct combination. For definiteness: - **בתי ספר** — Schools. - **בתי הספר** — The schools. #### Adjective agreement An adjective describing the whole combination agrees with the main noun—the first noun: **בתי ספר גדולים** Large schools. **תחנות אוטובוס חדשות** New bus stops. With definiteness: **בתי הספר הגדולים** The large schools. **תחנות האוטובוס החדשות** The new bus stops. Practice these as complete phrases before attempting long noun combinations. ### 8. Possessive suffixes in familiar expressions You know possession with **של**: **הספר שלי** — My book. Hebrew can also attach a possessive ending to a noun. This is especially common in certain family words and in more formal writing. Learn these frequent forms: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | אחי | a-**KHI** | My brother | | אחותי | a-kho-**TI** | My sister | | אמי | i-**MI** | My mother | | אבי | a-**VI** | My father | | הוריי | ho-**RAY** | My parents | Examples: **אחותי גרה בירושלים.** My sister lives in Jerusalem. **ביקרתי את הוריי.** I visited my parents. **אחי עובד בבית ספר.** My brother works at a school. In ordinary conversation, **אמא שלי** and **אבא שלי** are also very common. You do not need to attach possessive suffixes to every noun. Begin by recognizing and using these familiar expressions. ### 9. Numbers: matching gender Hebrew numbers have masculine and feminine forms. For counting nouns from three through ten, choose the form that matches the noun’s grammatical gender. | Number | With masculine nouns | With feminine nouns | |---|---|---| | 1 | אחד — e-**KHAD** | אחת — a-**KHAT** | | 2 | שניים — **SHNA**-yim | שתיים — **SHTA**-yim | | 3 | שלושה — shlo-**SHA** | שלוש — sha-**LOSH** | | 4 | ארבעה — ar-ba-**A** | ארבע — **AR**-ba | | 5 | חמישה — kha-mi-**SHA** | חמש — kha-**MESH** | | 6 | שישה — shi-**SHA** | שש — shesh | | 7 | שבעה — shiv-**A** | שבע — **SHE**-va | | 8 | שמונה — shmo-**NA** | שמונה — shmo-**NE** | | 9 | תשעה — tish-**A** | תשע — **TE**-sha | | 10 | עשרה — a-sa-**RA** | עשר — **E**-ser | The two forms of eight have the same unpointed spelling: - Masculine: **שְׁמוֹנָה** - Feminine: **שְׁמוֹנֶה** #### One follows the noun - **ספר אחד** — One book. - **מחברת אחת** — One notebook. #### Two has special forms immediately before a noun - **שני ספרים** — Two books. - **שתי מחברות** — Two notebooks. Use **שניים** and **שתיים** when the number stands independently in the relevant context. #### Three through ten precede the plural noun - **שלושה ספרים** — Three books. - **שלוש מחברות** — Three notebooks. - **חמישה ילדים** — Five boys or children. - **חמש ילדות** — Five girls. Remember the noun’s gender rather than relying on its plural ending: **שלושה שולחנות** Three tables. **שולחן** is masculine even though **שולחנות** ends in **־ות**. ### 10. Comparisons and superlatives Review: **הדירה הזאת גדולה יותר מהדירה שלי.** This apartment is bigger than my apartment. For “the biggest,” “the most interesting,” and similar expressions, learn two patterns: | Everyday pattern | More formal alternative | Meaning | |---|---|---| | הכי גדול | הגדול ביותר | The biggest | | הכי קטנה | הקטנה ביותר | The smallest — Feminine | | הכי מעניין | המעניין ביותר | The most interesting | Examples: **זה הספר הכי מעניין.** This is the most interesting book. **זאת הדירה הזולה ביותר.** This is the cheapest apartment. **הכי — ha-KHI** means “most” in this construction. **מעניין — me-an-YEN** means “interesting,” masculine. **מעניינת — me-an-YE-net** is the feminine form. An adjective still agrees with its noun: **הספר הכי מעניין** — The most interesting book. **הכתבה הכי מעניינת** — The most interesting article. ### 11. Expressing an opinion Learn: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | לדעתי | le-da-a-**TI** | In my opinion | | אני חושב ש־ | a-**NI** kho-**SHEV** she- | I think that… — Male speaker | | אני חושבת ש־ | a-**NI** kho-**SHE**-vet she- | I think that… — Female speaker | | אני מסכים | a-**NI** mas-**KIM** | I agree — Male speaker | | אני מסכימה | a-**NI** mas-ki-**MA** | I agree — Female speaker | Examples: **לדעתי, הדירה הזאת טובה יותר.** In my opinion, this apartment is better. **אני חושבת שהספר מעניין.** I think the book is interesting. — Female speaker. **אני לא מסכים.** I disagree. — Male speaker. To agree with a person: **אני מסכימה איתך.** I agree with you. — Female speaker. **להסכים עם…** means “to agree with someone.” A useful opinion includes a reason: **לדעתי, כדאי ללמוד כל יום, כי ככה קל יותר לזכור.** In my opinion, it is a good idea to study every day, because that way it is easier to remember. New words: - **ככה — KA-kha:** Like this; that way. - **קל — kal:** Easy. - **לזכור — liz-KOR:** To remember. ### 12. Agreeing partly and suggesting an alternative You do not have to choose between complete agreement and complete disagreement. Useful expressions: | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | זה נכון, אבל… | That is true, but… | | אני מבין, אבל… | I understand, but… — Male speaker | | אני מבינה, אבל… | I understand, but… — Female speaker | | אולי כדאי… | Perhaps it would be a good idea to… | | אפשר גם… | We could also…; it is also possible to… | Examples: **זה נכון, אבל הדירה יקרה מדי.** That is true, but the apartment is too expensive. **אולי כדאי לבוא ביום אחר.** Perhaps we should come on another day. **אפשר גם לנסוע ברכבת.** We could also travel by train. Practice responding to a suggestion with: 1. Something you accept. 2. A concern. 3. An alternative. **הדירה יפה, אבל היא יקרה מדי. אולי כדאי לראות דירה אחרת.** The apartment is nice, but it is too expensive. Perhaps we should see another apartment. ### 13. Making a polite complaint A clear complaint usually includes: - What you expected or bought. - What the problem is. - What you would like to happen. Example: **אתמול קניתי פה חולצה. בבית ראיתי שהיא קטנה מדי. אפשר להחליף אותה?** Yesterday I bought a shirt here. At home I saw that it was too small. Can I exchange it? Another example: **הזמנתי קפה בלי חלב, אבל יש בקפה חלב. אפשר להחליף אותו, בבקשה?** I ordered coffee without milk, but there is milk in the coffee. Could you replace it, please? Useful expressions: | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | יש בעיה. | There is a problem. | | זה לא עובד. | It does not work. | | זה לא מה שהזמנתי. | This is not what I ordered. | | אפשר לבדוק את זה? | Could you check this? | **לבדוק — liv-DOK** means “to check.” ### 14. Repairing a misunderstanding Use these expressions to clarify what someone meant: **לא הבנתי. אתה מתכוון ליום שני?** I didn’t understand. Do you mean Monday? — Addressing a man. **את מתכוונת לשמונה בבוקר?** Do you mean eight in the morning? — Addressing a woman. **התכוונתי ליום שלישי.** I meant Tuesday. Learn: - **מתכוון — mit-ka-VEN:** Means; intends — Masculine singular. - **מתכוונת — mit-ka-VE-net:** Means; intends — Feminine singular. - **התכוונתי — hit-ka-VAN-ti:** I meant; I intended. Another useful expression: **אז נפגשים בתשע, נכון?** So we are meeting at nine, right? **נפגשים — nif-ga-SHIM** means “meet; are meeting,” masculine plural or a mixed group. Confirming details helps prevent practical misunderstandings. ### 15. Keeping references clear Connected language uses pronouns to avoid repeating every noun. Compare: **קניתי ספר. הספר חדש. אני קוראת את הספר. הספר מעניין.** I bought a book. The book is new. I am reading the book. The book is interesting. A more connected version: **קניתי ספר חדש. אני קוראת אותו, והוא מעניין מאוד.** I bought a new book. I am reading it, and it is very interesting. The pronouns refer back to **ספר**: - **אותו** — It, as a direct object. - **הוא** — It, as the subject. For a feminine noun: **קניתי מחברת חדשה. היא קטנה, ואני משתמשת בה כל יום.** I bought a new notebook. It is small, and I use it every day. Learn: **להשתמש ב־ — le-hish-ta-MESH be-** To use something. **משתמשת — mish-ta-ME-shet:** Uses — Feminine singular. **בה — ba:** In it; with it, feminine, according to the construction. When several nouns are present, make sure the reader can tell which one a pronoun refers to. Repeat the noun when that is clearer. ### 16. אם השעות יתאימו לה, היא תתחיל ללמוד בחודש הבא.** New vocabulary: | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | כבר — kvar | Already | | קרוב — ka-ROV | Near; close | | הראשון — ha-ri-SHON | The first | | השני — ha-she-NI | The second | | לבחור — liv-KHOR | To choose | | שעות הלימוד | The class or study hours | | תרגול — tir-GUL | Practice | | יתאימו לה | Will suit her | | תתחיל — tat-KHIL | She will begin | Translation: Maya wants to improve her Hebrew. She can already read short texts, but speaking on the telephone is difficult for her. She wants to study in a new course. There are two courses. The first course is close to her home, but it is more expensive. The second course is cheaper, but the journey to it is long. Daniel thinks she should choose the first course. In his opinion, the short journey is important. Maya agrees with him, but she also wants to check the class hours. Yesterday she spoke with the teacher. He explained that the course includes a lot of speaking practice. If the hours suit her, she will begin studying next month. Answer: 1. What does Maya want to improve? 2.
