# Stage 0, 0.4: First communication Lesson page with audio: https://hebrew-course.pages.dev/#/unit/beginner-4 You can begin communicating in Hebrew before you know how to build sentences independently. In this unit, learn useful expressions as complete phrases. Later lessons will explain their grammar. By the end, you should be able to greet someone, introduce yourself, explain that you are learning Hebrew, ask for clarification, and ask simple practical questions. In the pronunciation guides, **CAPITALS** mark the stressed syllable. **Kh** represents the sound practiced in Unit 0.2. **Ey** sounds approximately like the vowel in English *they*. ### 1. Greetings and goodbyes | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning and use | |---|---|---| | שלום | sha-**LOM** | Hello; goodbye; peace | | היי | hay | Hi; informal | | בוקר טוב | **BO**-ker tov | Good morning | | ערב טוב | **E**-rev tov | Good evening | | לילה טוב | **LAY**-la tov | Good night | | להתראות | le-hit-ra-**OT** | Goodbye; see you | | ביי | bay | Bye; informal | Use **שלום** as your first general greeting. Use **לילה טוב** when saying goodbye at night or when someone is going to bed. #### Practice Say an appropriate expression for each situation: 1. You meet someone in the morning. 2. You begin an evening conversation. 3. You leave after meeting someone. 4. Someone is going to sleep. ### 2. Polite everyday words | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | תודה | to-**DA** | Thank you | | תודה רבה | to-**DA** ra-**BA** | Thank you very much | | בבקשה | be-va-ka-**SHA** | Please; you’re welcome | | סליחה | sli-**KHA** | Excuse me; sorry | | כן | ken | Yes | | לא | lo | No | | אולי | u-**LAY** | Maybe | **בבקשה** has several everyday uses. Learn these two first: - When making a request: **please**. - When replying to thanks: **you’re welcome**. A short exchange: **תודה!** *to-DA!* Thank you! **בבקשה.** *be-va-ka-SHA.* You’re welcome. Use **סליחה** to get someone’s attention politely: **סליחה…** *sli-KHA…* Excuse me… You can then ask your question. ### 3. Introducing yourself | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | אני… | a-**NI**… | I am… | | קוראים לי… | kor-**IM** li… | My name is… | | נעים מאוד | na-**IM** me-**OD** | Nice to meet you | For example: **שלום, אני דניאל.** *sha-LOM, a-NI da-ni-EL.* Hello, I’m Daniel. Or: **קוראים לי דניאל.** *kor-IM li da-ni-EL.* My name is Daniel. Both are natural ways to introduce yourself. **קוראים לי** literally has a structure like “they call me,” but learn it as one expression meaning **“my name is.”** After someone introduces themselves, you can say: **נעים מאוד.** *na-IM me-OD.* Nice to meet you. #### Practice Complete these aloud with your own name: - **שלום, אני…** - **קוראים לי…** ### 4. Asking someone’s name Hebrew often uses different forms depending on whether you are addressing a man or a woman. | Addressing | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---|---| | A man | איך קוראים לך? | eykh kor-**IM** le-**KHA**? | What is your name? | | A woman | איך קוראים לך? | eykh kor-**IM** **LAKH**? | What is your name? | Notice that the unpointed spelling is identical. The pronunciation of **לך** changes. With vowel marks: - To a man: **לְךָ — le-KHA** - To a woman: **לָךְ — lakh** Another common pair is: - To a man: **מה שמך? — ma shim-KHA?** - To a woman: **מה שמך? — ma shmekh?** For your first conversations, use **איך קוראים לך?** #### Mini-conversation **שלום, אני דניאל. איך קוראים לך?** Hello, I’m Daniel. What is your name? **קוראים לי מאיה.** My name is Maya. **נעים מאוד.** Nice to meet you. **נעים מאוד.** Nice to meet you. ### 5. Asking how someone is | Addressing | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---|---| | A man | מה שלומך? | ma shlom-**KHA**? | | A woman | מה שלומך? | ma shlo-**MEKH**? | Both mean **“How are you?”** Possible answers: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | בסדר | be-**SE**-der | Fine; okay | | טוב, תודה | tov, to-**DA** | Good, thank you | | מצוין | me-tsu-**YAN** | Excellent | To begin, use: **בסדר, תודה.** *be-SE-der, to-DA.* Fine, thank you. To return the question: - To a man: **ואתה? — ve-a-TA? — And you?** - To a woman: **ואת? — ve-AT? — And you?** #### Conversation **מה שלומך?** How are you? **בסדר, תודה. ואתה?** Fine, thank you. And you? **טוב, תודה.** Good, thank you. ### 6. Saying which languages you speak Some Hebrew forms depend on the person speaking. | Speaker | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---|---| | Male | אני מדבר אנגלית | a-**NI** me-da-**BER** an-**GLIT** | I speak English | | Female | אני מדברת אנגלית | a-**NI** me-da-**BE**-ret an-**GLIT** | I speak English | | Male | אני לומד עברית | a-**NI** lo-**MED** iv-**RIT** | I am learning Hebrew | | Female | אני לומדת עברית | a-**NI** lo-**ME**-det iv-**RIT** | I am learning Hebrew | Learn the form you will use for yourself first. Then learn to recognize the other form. Notice: - **אנגלית — an-GLIT:** English. - **עברית — iv-RIT:** Hebrew. For example: **אני מדבר אנגלית. אני לומד עברית.** I speak English. I am learning Hebrew. *Male speaker.* **אני מדברת אנגלית. אני לומדת עברית.** I speak English. I am learning Hebrew. *Female speaker.* ### 7. Saying that you do not understand | Speaker | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---|---| | Male | אני לא מבין | a-**NI** lo me-**VIN** | I do not understand | | Female | אני לא מבינה | a-**NI** lo me-vi-**NA** | I do not understand | You can soften this with **סליחה**: **סליחה, אני לא מבין.** Excuse me, I don’t understand. *Male speaker.* **סליחה, אני לא מבינה.** Excuse me, I don’t understand. *Female speaker.* Use this as soon as you lose the meaning. You do not need to wait until the conversation becomes impossible to follow. ### 8. Asking someone to repeat or slow down These expressions work when speaking to either a man or a woman: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | אפשר לחזור על זה? | ef-**SHAR** lakh-**ZOR** al ze? | Could you repeat that? | | אפשר לדבר לאט יותר? | ef-**SHAR** le-da-**BER** le-**AT** yo-**TER**? | Could you speak more slowly? | | עוד פעם, בבקשה | od **PA**-am, be-va-ka-**SHA** | Once more, please | | לאט, בבקשה | le-**AT**, be-va-ka-**SHA** | Slowly, please | The shortest versions are useful when you are struggling: **עוד פעם, בבקשה.** Once more, please. **לאט, בבקשה.** Slowly, please. For now, learn **אפשר…?** as a useful way to begin a request. Its grammar will come later. #### Practice sequence Say these three phrases together: 1. **סליחה.** 2. **אני לא מבין / אני לא מבינה.** 3. **עוד פעם, בבקשה.** ### 9. Asking about words | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | מה זה? | ma ze? | What is this? | | מה פירוש המילה הזאת? | ma pe-**RUSH** ha-mi-**LA** ha-**ZOT**? | What does this word mean? | | איך אומרים … בעברית? | eykh om-**RIM** … be-iv-**RIT**? | How do you say … in Hebrew? | | אפשר באנגלית? | ef-**SHAR** be-an-**GLIT**? | Could we use English? | You can point to an object and ask: **מה זה?** What is this? You can insert an English word into this question: **איך אומרים “water” בעברית?** How do you say “water” in Hebrew? The answer is: **מים — MA-yim — water** You can then repeat the word to check your pronunciation. ### 10. Asking where something is Use: **איפה…? — EY-fo…? — Where is…? / Where are…?** Examples: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | איפה השירותים? | **EY**-fo ha-she-ru-**TIM**? | Where is the bathroom? | | איפה התחנה? | **EY**-fo ha-ta-kha-**NA**? | Where is the station or stop? | | איפה היציאה? | **EY**-fo ha-ye-tsi-**A**? | Where is the exit? | Begin politely: **סליחה, איפה השירותים?** Excuse me, where is the bathroom? You may hear: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | פה | po | Here | | שם | sham | There | | ימינה | ya-**MI**-na | To the right | | שמאלה | **SMO**-la | To the left | | ישר | ya-**SHAR** | Straight ahead | At this stage, recognizing a short answer and a pointing gesture is enough. You will learn detailed directions later. ### 11. Asking the price Use: **כמה זה עולה?** *KA-ma ze o-LE?* How much does this cost? For example: **סליחה, כמה זה עולה?** Excuse me, how much does this cost? You can point to the item while asking. You will learn numbers systematically in a later unit. For now, if you cannot understand the spoken price, ask the person to write it: **אפשר לכתוב את זה?** *ef-SHAR likh-TOV et ze?* Could you write that? ### 12. Three complete conversations Read each conversation once for meaning, then aloud. After that, replace the names or change the situation. #### Conversation A — Meeting someone **דניאל:** שלום, אני דניאל. איך קוראים לך? Hello, I’m Daniel. What is your name? **מאיה:** קוראים לי מאיה. נעים מאוד. My name is Maya. Nice to meet you. **דניאל:** נעים מאוד. מה שלומך? Nice to meet you. How are you? **מאיה:** בסדר, תודה. ואתה? Fine, thank you.
