# Level Alef, Alef 3: Practical independence and first narratives Lesson page with audio: https://hebrew-course.pages.dev/#/unit/alef-3 You can describe yourself and talk about everyday activities. In this unit, you will explain simple problems, describe familiar things in more detail, and begin talking about the past. By the end, you should be able to arrange an appointment, ask for a different item in a shop, describe your home and family, and give a short account of yesterday. In pronunciation guides, **CAPITALS** mark the stressed syllable. **Kh** represents the sound practiced in Stage 0. ### 1. Review: building a useful sentence You already know these patterns: | Purpose | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---|---| | Identify | אני תלמידה. | I am a student. — Female speaker | | Describe | הבית קטן. | The house is small. | | Express possession | יש לי ספר. | I have a book. | | Describe an activity | אני לומדת עברית. | I study Hebrew. — Female speaker | | Express a wish | אני רוצה ללמוד. | I want to learn. | | Express ability | אני יכולה לבוא. | I can come. — Female speaker | You can combine information: **אני לומדת עברית כי אני רוצה לעבוד בישראל.** I am learning Hebrew because I want to work in Israel. Now add the ability to describe what happened before the present. ### 2. Your first past-tense expressions Learn these time expressions: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | אתמול | et-**MOL** | Yesterday | | שלשום | shil-**SHOM** | The day before yesterday | | אתמול בבוקר | et-**MOL** ba-**BO**-ker | Yesterday morning | | אתמול בערב | et-**MOL** ba-**E**-rev | Yesterday evening | | בשבוע שעבר | ba-sha-**VU**-a she-a-**VAR** | Last week | | לפני שנה | lif-**NEY** sha-**NA** | A year ago | Begin with **אתמול**, then add the others gradually. Compare: **היום אני עובד בבית.** Today I am working at home. — Male speaker. **אתמול עבדתי בבית.** Yesterday I worked at home. In the past tense, the verb changes to indicate who performed the action. ### 3. A first set of past-tense verbs Learn these forms as useful vocabulary. You will study the past tense systematically in Bet 1. | Meaning | I | He | She | |---|---|---|---| | Studied; learned | למדתי | למד | למדה | | Worked | עבדתי | עבד | עבדה | | Wrote | כתבתי | כתב | כתבה | | Ate | אכלתי | אכל | אכלה | | Went; walked | הלכתי | הלך | הלכה | | Came | באתי | בא | באה | Pronounce the **I** forms: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---| | למדתי | la-**MAD**-ti | | עבדתי | a-**VAD**-ti | | כתבתי | ka-**TAV**-ti | | אכלתי | a-**KHAL**-ti | | הלכתי | ha-**LAKH**-ti | | באתי | **BA**-ti | Notice the ending **־תי** in these first-person singular forms. Unlike the present tense, these **I** forms are the same for male and female speakers: - A man: **אתמול למדתי עברית.** - A woman: **אתמול למדתי עברית.** Both mean: “Yesterday I studied Hebrew.” Examples: **אתמול עבדתי בבית.** Yesterday I worked at home. **הוא כתב מכתב.** He wrote a letter. **היא אכלה בבית.** She ate at home. **אתמול הלכתי לכיתה.** Yesterday I went to class. **בערב מאיה באה לבית שלי.** In the evening, Maya came to my house. In some cases, a past form looks like a present form in unpointed writing. Time expressions and context help establish the meaning. ### 4. Keeping or omitting אני These past forms already identify the speaker, so you can say: **למדתי עברית.** I studied Hebrew. You can also include **אני**: **אני למדתי עברית.** Both are grammatical. An explicit pronoun can help establish the subject or add emphasis. For your first narratives, either is fine. Keep the meaning clear. ### 5. Was and were: היה In Alef 1, you learned: **אני בבית.** I am at home. To put this in the past, use a past form of **להיות — to be**. Learn these forms first: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | הייתי | ha-**YI**-ti | I was | | הוא היה | hu ha-**YA** | He was | | היא הייתה | hi ha-ye-**TA** | She was | | הם היו | hem ha-**YU** | They were — Masculine or mixed group | | הן היו | hen ha-**YU** | They were — Feminine group | Examples: - **אתמול הייתי בבית.** — Yesterday I was at home. - **הוא היה בכיתה.** — He was in the classroom. - **היא הייתה בישראל.** — She was in Israel. - **הם היו פה.** — They were here. The form **הייתי** is the same for male and female speakers. A description may still need gender agreement: - Male speaker: **הייתי עייף.** — I was tired. - Female speaker: **הייתי עייפה.** — I was tired. Pronunciation: - **עייף — a-YEF** - **עייפה — a-ye-FA** ### 6. Talking about past possession You know: **יש לי ספר.** I have a book. For the past: **היה לי ספר.** I had a book. The form of “was” agrees with the thing possessed: | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | היה לי ספר. | I had a book. | | הייתה לי מחברת. | I had a notebook. | | היו לי ספרים. | I had books. | Negate with **לא**: **לא היה לי זמן.** I did not have time. **לא הייתה לי מחברת.** I did not have a notebook. These are useful expressions to recognize and practice. You will expand this pattern later. ### 7. Building a short narrative A narrative tells what happened in a sequence. Use: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | קודם | **KO**-dem | First; before that | | אחר כך | **A**-khar kakh | After that; then | | ואז | ve-**AZ** | And then | | בסוף | ba-**SOF** | At the end; finally | Example: **אתמול הייתי בבית. קודם למדתי עברית. אחר כך אכלתי. בערב הלכתי לבית של מאיה.** Yesterday I was at home. First I studied Hebrew. After that I ate. In the evening I went to Maya’s house. Keep your first narratives short. Three or four accurate sentences communicate more than a long account you cannot yet control. ### 8. Prepositions change with the person In English, you say: - To me. - To you. - With me. - With you. Hebrew often combines a preposition and a personal ending into one word. You already know several forms of **ל־** from possession: | Person | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---|---| | To me | לי | li | | To you — Masculine singular | לך | le-**KHA** | | To you — Feminine singular | לך | lakh | | To him | לו | lo | | To her | לה | la | | To us | לנו | **LA**-nu | Now learn **עם — im**, “with”: | Meaning | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---|---| | With me | איתי | i-**TI** | | With you — Masculine singular | איתך | it-**KHA** | | With you — Feminine singular | איתך | i-**TAKH** | | With him | איתו | i-**TO** | | With her | איתה | i-**TA** | | With us | איתנו | i-**TA**-nu | Examples: **את רוצה ללמוד איתי?** Do you want to study with me? — Addressing a woman. **אני רוצה לדבר איתך.** I want to speak with you. **היא עובדת איתו.** She works with him. **הוא לומד איתנו.** He studies with us. Learn each expression through a sentence rather than memorizing endings without context. ### 9. Describing how you feel | Masculine | Feminine | Meaning | |---|---|---| | עייף — a-**YEF** | עייפה — a-ye-**FA** | Tired | | חולה — kho-**LE** | חולה — kho-**LA** | Sick | | רעב — ra-**EV** | רעבה — re-e-**VA** | Hungry | | צמא — tsa-**ME** | צמאה — tsme-**A** | Thirsty | Examples: - **אני עייף.** — I am tired. — Male speaker. - **אני עייפה.** — I am tired. — Female speaker. - **היא חולה.** — She is sick. - **אני רעבה. אני רוצה לאכול.** — I am hungry. I want to eat. — Female speaker. For feeling hot or cold, learn these expressions: **חם לי.** *kham li.* I feel hot. **קר לי.** *kar li.* I feel cold. With **ל־** forms: - **קר לו.** — He feels cold. - **חם לה.** — She feels hot. For the weather: - **חם היום.** — It is hot today. - **קר היום.** — It is cold today. ### 10. Expressing a need Use **צריך**, “need; need to.” | Form | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---|---| | Masculine singular | צריך | tsa-**RIKH** | | Feminine singular | צריכה | tsri-**KHA** | | Masculine plural | צריכים | tsri-**KHIM** | | Feminine plural | צריכות | tsri-**KHOT** | You can need a thing: **אני צריך עט.** I need a pen. — Male speaker. **אני צריכה מים.** I need water. — Female speaker. Or need to do something: **אני צריך לעבוד.** I need to work. — Male speaker. **היא צריכה ללכת הביתה.** She needs to go home. **הביתה — ha-BAY-ta** means “home” in the sense of movement toward home. Compare: - **אני בבית.** — I am at home. - **אני הולכת הביתה.** — I am going home. — Female speaker. ### 11. Possible, permitted, and forbidden Learn three useful impersonal expressions: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | אפשר | ef-**SHAR** | It is possible; one may | | מותר | mu-**TAR** | It is permitted | | אסור | a-**SUR** | It is forbidden; one must not | Follow them with an infinitive: **אפשר לשבת פה?** May I sit here? **מותר לצלם פה?** Is photography allowed here? **אסור לעשן פה.** Smoking is prohibited here. New infinitives: - **לשבת — la-SHE-vet:** To sit. - **לצלם — le-tsa-LEM:** To photograph. - **לעשן — le-a-SHEN:** To smoke. You may also hear: **אי אפשר.** *i ef-SHAR.* It is not possible. ### 12. Comparing things Use **יותר — yo-TER**, “more,” and **פחות — pa-KHOT**, “less.” **הבית הזה גדול יותר.** This house is bigger. **הספר הזה פחות יקר.** This book is less expensive. To introduce the thing you are comparing with, use **מ־**: **הבית הזה גדול יותר מהבית שלי.** This house is bigger than my house. **הספר הזה פחות יקר מהספר ההוא.** This book is less expensive than that book. Learn these adjective pairs: | Masculine | Feminine | Meaning | |---|---|---| | יקר — ya-**KAR** | יקרה — ye-ka-**RA** | Expensive | | זול — zol | זולה — zo-**LA** | Cheap; inexpensive | | נוח — **NO**-akh | נוחה — no-**KHA** | Comfortable; convenient | Examples: - **הכיסא הזה נוח יותר.** — This chair is more comfortable. - **החולצה הזאת זולה יותר.** — This shirt is cheaper. The adjective still agrees with its noun. ### 13. “This book” and “that book” Earlier, you learned: **זה ספר.** This is a book. Now learn: **הספר הזה** This book. The structure changes: | Meaning | Hebrew | |---|---| | This book | הספר הזה | | This notebook | המחברת הזאת | | These books | הספרים האלה | | These notebooks | המחברות האלה | For “that”: - **הספר ההוא** — That book. - **המחברת ההיא** — That notebook. Practice: **הספר הזה חדש.** This book is new. **אני רוצה את המחברת הזאת.** I want this notebook. Notice **את** before the definite direct object. ### 14. Explaining a problem in a shop Useful vocabulary: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | חולצה | khul-**TSA** | Shirt | | נעליים | na-a-**LA**-yim | Shoes | | מידה | mi-**DA** | Size | | אחר | a-**KHER** | Other; different — Masculine | | אחרת | a-**KHE**-ret | Other; different — Feminine | | להחליף | le-hakh-**LIF** | To exchange; replace | Useful phrases: **החולצה הזאת גדולה מדי.** This shirt is too big. **מדי — mi-DAY** means “too” in the sense of an excessive degree. **יש מידה אחרת?** Is there another size? **אפשר להחליף את זה?** Can I exchange this? **אני רוצה חולצה קטנה יותר.** I would like a smaller shirt. A short conversation: **Customer:** סליחה, החולצה הזאת גדולה מדי. Excuse me, this shirt is too big. **Assistant:** יש פה מידה אחרת. There is another size here. **Customer:** אפשר להחליף את החולצה? Can I exchange the shirt? **Assistant:** כן, אפשר. Yes, you can. ### 15. Noun combinations: a first look at smikhut Hebrew often joins nouns into a combination called **סמיכות — smi-KHUT**, the construct state. Examples: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | בית ספר | beyt **SE**-fer | School | | בית קפה | beyt ka-**FE** | Café | | חדר שינה | **KHA**-dar she-**NA** | Bedroom | | תחנת אוטובוס | ta-kha-**NAT** o-to-**BUS** | Bus stop | The first noun may change form: - **בית — BA-yit** - **בית ספר — beyt SE-fer** To make these combinations definite, the article normally goes on the final noun: - **בית ספר** — A school. - **בית הספר** — The school. - **תחנת אוטובוס** — A bus stop. - **תחנת האוטובוס** — The bus stop. Learn these combinations as complete expressions for now. ### 16. Adding information with ש־ The attached word **ש־**, usually pronounced **she-**, can connect a noun to a clause describing it. In these sentences, it corresponds to English “who,” “that,” or “which”: **זה האיש שגר פה.** This is the man who lives here. **זאת המורה שעובדת בבית הספר.** This is the teacher who works at the school. **זה הספר שאני קורא.** This is the book that I am reading. — Male speaker. **זאת המחברת שקניתי.** This is the notebook that I bought. Learn **קניתי — ka-NI-ti**, “I bought,” as one more useful past-tense form. Notice that **ש־** attaches directly to the next word: - **שגר** - **שעובדת** - **שאני** - **שקניתי** Start with short clauses. You will study more complex relative clauses later. ### 17. Ages, dates, and appointments To say your age, use: - Male speaker: **אני בן…** - Female speaker: **אני בת…** For example: **אני בן שלושים.** I am thirty years old. — Male speaker. **אני בת שלושים.** I am thirty years old. — Female speaker. **שלושים — shlo-SHIM** means “thirty.” You may hear: - To a man: **בן כמה אתה?** — How old are you? - To a woman: **בת כמה את?** — How old are you? For appointments, learn: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | תור | tor | Appointment; turn; queue | | לקבוע תור | lik-**BO**-a tor | To make an appointment | | תאריך | ta-a-**RIKH** | Date | | באיזה תאריך? | be-**EY**-ze ta-a-**RIKH**? | On what date? | Examples: **אני רוצה לקבוע תור.** I would like to make an appointment. **יש תור ביום שני?** Is there an appointment available on Monday? **באיזו שעה?** At what time? **בשמונה וחצי.** At eight thirty. A date example: **בשלושה בנובמבר** *bi-shlo-SHA be-no-VEM-ber* On November third. For now, practice recognizing written dates and confirming the day and time. You will study the full number system in greater detail later. ### 18. Describing your home and family Useful vocabulary: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | דירה | di-**RA** | Apartment | | חדר | **KHE**-der | Room | | מטבח | mit-**BAKH** | Kitchen | | סלון | sa-**LON** | Living room | | שכונה | shkhu-**NA** | Neighborhood | | עיר | ir | City | | הורים | ho-**RIM** | Parents | | אחים | a-**KHIM** | Brothers; siblings | For **שכונה**, keep the opening consonants together: *shkhu-NA*.
