# Level Alef, Alef 2: Daily routines and the present tense Lesson page with audio: https://hebrew-course.pages.dev/#/unit/alef-2 In Alef 1, you learned to say who someone is, describe objects, and express possession. Now you will describe what people do. By the end of this unit, you should be able to talk about your routine, say what you want or can do, order simple food and drinks, discuss schedules, and arrange a meeting. In pronunciation guides, **CAPITALS** mark the stressed syllable. **Kh** represents the sound in Scottish *loch*. ### 1. Present-tense verbs A verb expresses an action or situation: study, work, eat, live. Hebrew present-tense verbs usually have four forms: | Form | Used with | |---|---| | Masculine singular | One male person; a masculine singular noun | | Feminine singular | One female person; a feminine singular noun | | Masculine plural | Male or mixed groups; masculine plural nouns | | Feminine plural | Female groups; feminine plural nouns | Unlike English, the verb form does not change between **I**, **you**, and **he** when they refer to the same gender and number. Compare: - **אני לומד.** — I study. — Male speaker. - **אתה לומד.** — You study. — Addressing a man. - **הוא לומד.** — He studies. All three use **לומד**. For a female person: - **אני לומדת.** — I study. - **את לומדת.** — You study. - **היא לומדת.** — She studies. ### 2. Your first verb: ללמוד — to study; to learn | Form | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---|---| | Masculine singular | לומד | lo-**MED** | | Feminine singular | לומדת | lo-**ME**-det | | Masculine plural | לומדים | lom-**DIM** | | Feminine plural | לומדות | lom-**DOT** | Use the form that agrees with the subject: **אני לומד עברית.** I study Hebrew. — Male speaker. **אני לומדת עברית.** I study Hebrew. — Female speaker. **אנחנו לומדים עברית.** We study Hebrew. — Male or mixed group. **הן לומדות עברית.** They study Hebrew. — Female group. The same present-tense form can express a regular activity or something happening now: - **אני לומדת עברית כל יום.** — I study Hebrew every day. - **אני לומדת עברית עכשיו.** — I am studying Hebrew now. English uses different constructions; Hebrew uses the same verb form and lets context clarify the meaning. ### 3. Common present-tense patterns Learn these verbs as four-form sets. | Meaning | Masculine singular | Feminine singular | Masculine plural | Feminine plural | |---|---|---|---|---| | Study; learn | לומד | לומדת | לומדים | לומדות | | Work | עובד | עובדת | עובדים | עובדות | | Write | כותב | כותבת | כותבים | כותבות | | Eat | אוכל | אוכלת | אוכלים | אוכלות | | Walk; go | הולך | הולכת | הולכים | הולכות | | Speak | מדבר | מדברת | מדברים | מדברות | Pronounce the singular forms: | Masculine | Feminine | |---|---| | lo-**MED** | lo-**ME**-det | | o-**VED** | o-**VE**-det | | ko-**TEV** | ko-**TE**-vet | | o-**KHEL** | o-**KHE**-let | | ho-**LEKH** | ho-**LE**-khet | | me-da-**BER** | me-da-**BE**-ret | Some forms follow different patterns: | Meaning | Masculine singular | Feminine singular | Masculine plural | Feminine plural | |---|---|---|---|---| | Live; reside | גר | גרה | גרים | גרות | | Read; call | קורא | קוראת | קוראים | קוראות | | Drink | שותה | שותה | שותים | שותות | Pronunciation matters where spelling is identical: - **שׁוֹתֶה — sho-TE:** drinks, masculine singular. - **שׁוֹתָה — sho-TA:** drinks, feminine singular. Other useful pronunciations: - **גר — gar** - **גרה — GA-ra** - **קורא — ko-RE** - **קוראת — ko-RET** You will learn more about the larger verb system gradually. For now, use these frequent forms until they become familiar. ### 4. Building an action sentence Begin with this pattern: **Subject + verb + additional information** Examples: | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | אני עובד בבית. | I work at home. — Male speaker | | היא עובדת בבית. | She works at home. | | אנחנו לומדים עברית. | We study Hebrew. | | הוא קורא ספר. | He reads a book. | | הן שותות מים. | They drink water. — Female group | | הילדים אוכלים לחם. | The children eat bread. | You can add a time expression: **אני עובד בבית היום.** I am working at home today. Or place the time first: **היום אני עובד בבית.** Today I am working at home. Both are useful beginner patterns. ### 5. Making actions negative Place **לא** before the verb: - **אני לא עובד היום.** — I am not working today. - **היא לא שותה קפה.** — She does not drink coffee. - **אנחנו לא לומדים עכשיו.** — We are not studying now. Remember the difference between negating an action and saying you do not have something: - **אני לא קורא.** — I am not reading. - **אין לי ספר.** — I do not have a book. Use **לא** with these verbs. Use **אין לי** for “I do not have.” ### 6. Asking about activities A yes/no question can keep the statement’s word order: **את עובדת היום?** Are you working today? — Addressing a woman. **אתה לומד עברית?** Do you study Hebrew? — Addressing a man. Add question words for more information: | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | איפה אתה עובד? | Where do you work? — To a man | | איפה את עובדת? | Where do you work? — To a woman | | מה היא קוראת? | What is she reading? | | מתי הם לומדים? | When do they study? | | מי שותה קפה? | Who drinks coffee? | | למה אתה לומד עברית? | Why are you learning Hebrew? — To a man | A short answer is often enough: **איפה את עובדת?** Where do you work? **בבית.** At home. For practice, also give the full answer: **אני עובדת בבית.** ### 7. Definite direct objects: את A direct object is the person or thing directly affected by an action. Compare: **אני קורא ספר.** I am reading a book. **אני קורא את הספר.** I am reading the book. Hebrew normally places **את — et** before a **definite direct object**. At this stage, recognize three common definite types: | Type | Example | Meaning | |---|---|---| | Noun with ה־ | אני קורא את הספר. | I am reading the book. | | Personal name | אני אוהב את מאיה. | I love Maya. | | Possessive phrase | אני קורא את הספר שלך. | I am reading your book. | With an indefinite object: **היא אוכלת לחם.** She is eating bread. With a definite object: **היא אוכלת את הלחם.** She is eating the bread. Do not put **את** before every noun: **היא עובדת בבית.** She works at home. Here, **בבית** expresses a location. Also distinguish two words with the same unpointed spelling: - **אַתְּ — at:** you, feminine singular. - **אֶת — et:** the definite direct-object marker. **את קוראת את הספר.** *at ko-RET et ha-SE-fer.* You are reading the book. ### 8. Infinitives: “to study,” “to work” An infinitive names an action without specifying who performs it. Many Hebrew infinitives begin with **ל־**. | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | ללמוד | lil-**MOD** | To study; to learn | | לעבוד | la-a-**VOD** | To work | | לקרוא | lik-**RO** | To read | | לכתוב | likh-**TOV** | To write | | לדבר | le-da-**BER** | To speak | | לשתות | lish-**TOT** | To drink | | לאכול | le-e-**KHOL** | To eat | | ללכת | la-**LE**-khet | To go; to walk | | לבוא | la-**VO** | To come | Learn the infinitive together with its present-tense forms: **ללמוד — לומד — לומדת** To study — studies, masculine — studies, feminine. ### 9. Saying what you want Use **רוצה**, “want.” | Form | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---|---| | Masculine singular | רוצה | ro-**TSE** | | Feminine singular | רוצה | ro-**TSA** | | Masculine plural | רוצים | ro-**TSIM** | | Feminine plural | רוצות | ro-**TSOT** | You can want a thing: **אני רוצה קפה.** I want coffee. Or want to do something: **אני רוצה ללמוד עברית.** I want to learn Hebrew. **היא רוצה לקרוא.** She wants to read. **אנחנו רוצים לאכול.** We want to eat. The first verb agrees with the subject. The infinitive stays unchanged: - **הוא רוצה ללמוד.** - **היא רוצה ללמוד.** - **הם רוצים ללמוד.** - **הן רוצות ללמוד.** To make the sentence negative: **אני לא רוצה לשתות קפה.** I do not want to drink coffee. ### 10. Saying what you can do Use **יכול**, “can; be able to.” | Form | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---|---| | Masculine singular | יכול | ya-**KHOL** | | Feminine singular | יכולה | ye-kho-**LA** | | Masculine plural | יכולים | ye-kho-**LIM** | | Feminine plural | יכולות | ye-kho-**LOT** | Follow it with an infinitive: - **אני יכול לקרוא בעברית.** — I can read in Hebrew. — Male speaker. - **אני יכולה לקרוא בעברית.** — I can read in Hebrew. — Female speaker. - **היא יכולה לבוא היום.** — She can come today. - **אנחנו לא יכולים לבוא.** — We cannot come. In everyday conversation, **יכול** can express ability or practical availability: **אתה יכול לבוא מחר?** Can you come tomorrow? ### 11. Likes and dislikes Use **אוהב**, meaning “like” or “love,” depending on context. | Masculine singular | Feminine singular | Masculine plural | Feminine plural | |---|---|---|---| | אוהב | אוהבת | אוהבים | אוהבות | | o-**HEV** | o-**HE**-vet | o-ha-**VIM** | o-ha-**VOT** | Examples: **אני אוהבת קפה.** I like coffee. **הוא אוהב לקרוא.** He likes reading. **אנחנו אוהבים ללמוד עברית.** We like learning Hebrew. **היא לא אוהבת לעבוד בבית.** She does not like working at home.
