# Level Alef, Alef 1: People, objects, and basic sentences Lesson page with audio: https://hebrew-course.pages.dev/#/unit/alef-1 You can already introduce yourself and use a few useful expressions. Now you will begin building sentences from individual words. By the end of this unit, you should be able to identify people and objects, describe them, ask simple questions, express possession, and write a short personal profile. ### 1. Personal pronouns: I, you, he, she A pronoun stands in place of a person’s name or a noun. | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | אני | a-**NI** | I | | אתה | a-**TA** | You, masculine singular | | את | at | You, feminine singular | | הוא | hu | He; it, for a masculine noun | | היא | hi | She; it, for a feminine noun | | אנחנו | a-**NAKH**-nu | We | | אתם | a-**TEM** | You, masculine plural | | אתן | a-**TEN** | You, feminine plural | | הם | hem | They, masculine | | הן | hen | They, feminine | In standard usage, the masculine plural also serves mixed groups. You may hear variation in everyday speech, but learn these distinctions first. **You** changes according to the people you are addressing: - One man: **אתה** - One woman: **את** - Several men or a mixed group: **אתם** - Several women: **אתן** Practice replacing a name with a pronoun: - **דניאל → הוא** - **מאיה → היא** - **דניאל ומאיה → הם** - **מאיה ודנה → הן** ### 2. Your first sentence pattern: “I am…” In a basic present-tense identification sentence, Hebrew usually has no separate word corresponding to English **am, is,** or **are**. **אני דניאל.** *a-NI da-ni-EL.* I am Daniel. **היא מורה.** *hi mo-RA.* She is a teacher. **אנחנו תלמידים.** *a-NAKH-nu tal-mi-DIM.* We are students. The basic pattern is: **Person + identity or description** Examples: | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | אני תלמיד. | I am a student. — Male speaker | | אני תלמידה. | I am a student. — Female speaker | | אתה מורה. | You are a teacher. — Addressing a man | | את מורה. | You are a teacher. — Addressing a woman | | הוא ישראלי. | He is Israeli. | | היא ישראלית. | She is Israeli. | The word **מורה** has the same unpointed spelling for a male or female teacher, but different pronunciation: - Male teacher: **מוֹרֶה — mo-RE** - Female teacher: **מוֹרָה — mo-RA** ### 3. Nouns have grammatical gender Every Hebrew noun has a grammatical gender: masculine or feminine. For people, grammatical gender often corresponds to the person. Objects also have grammatical gender. | Masculine noun | Meaning | Feminine noun | Meaning | |---|---|---|---| | ילד — **YE**-led | Boy; child | ילדה — yal-**DA** | Girl | | תלמיד — tal-**MID** | Male student | תלמידה — tal-mi-**DA** | Female student | | ספר — **SE**-fer | Book | מחברת — makh-**BE**-ret | Notebook | | שולחן — shul-**KHAN** | Table | תמונה — tmu-**NA** | Picture | | בית — **BA**-yit | House | דלת — **DE**-let | Door | Many feminine nouns end in **־ה** or **־ת**, but this is a clue rather than a rule that works every time. For example: - **תמונה** is feminine. - **מחברת** is feminine. - **לילה — LAY-la**, “night,” is masculine. Learn each noun together with a short phrase that reveals its gender: - **ספר טוב** — a good book. - **מחברת טובה** — a good notebook. ### 4. Singular and plural Two common plural endings are: - **־ים** for many masculine nouns. - **־ות** for many feminine nouns. | Singular | Plural | Meaning | |---|---|---| | ילד | ילדים | Boy → boys | | תלמיד | תלמידים | Male student → male students | | ספר | ספרים | Book → books | | ילדה | ילדות | Girl → girls | | תלמידה | תלמידות | Female student → female students | | מחברת | מחברות | Notebook → notebooks | Pronunciation often changes when a plural ending is added: - **יֶלֶד — YE-led** - **יְלָדִים — ye-la-DIM** Learn the singular and plural together. Some common nouns have less predictable forms: | Singular | Plural | Meaning | |---|---|---| | איש — ish | אנשים — a-na-**SHIM** | Man → people; men | | אישה — i-**SHA** | נשים — na-**SHIM** | Woman → women | | בית — **BA**-yit | בתים — ba-**TIM** | House → houses | | שולחן — shul-**KHAN** | שולחנות — shul-kha-**NOT** | Table → tables | The plural ending does not always reveal gender. **שולחן** remains masculine in the plural, even though **שולחנות** ends in **־ות**. For a general group of people, you will often use **אנשים**. ### 5. Describing nouns with adjectives An adjective describes a noun: big, small, good, new. In Hebrew, an adjective usually comes **after** the noun and agrees with its gender and number. | Form | “Good” | “Big” | “New” | |---|---|---|---| | Masculine singular | טוב — tov | גדול — ga-**DOL** | חדש — kha-**DASH** | | Feminine singular | טובה — to-**VA** | גדולה — gdo-**LA** | חדשה — kha-da-**SHA** | | Masculine plural | טובים — to-**VIM** | גדולים — gdo-**LIM** | חדשים — kha-da-**SHIM** | | Feminine plural | טובות — to-**VOT** | גדולות — gdo-**LOT** | חדשות — kha-da-**SHOT** | Examples: - **ספר טוב** — a good book. - **מחברת טובה** — a good notebook. - **ספרים טובים** — good books. - **מחברות טובות** — good notebooks. Another useful adjective is **קטן — ka-TAN**, “small”: - Masculine singular: **קטן** - Feminine singular: **קטנה — kta-NA** - Masculine plural: **קטנים — kta-NIM** - Feminine plural: **קטנות — kta-NOT** Remember the masculine noun with a **־ות** plural: **שולחנות גדולים** Big tables. The adjective is masculine plural because **שולחן** is masculine. ### 6. “A book” and “the book” Hebrew has no separate indefinite article corresponding to English **a** or **an**. **ספר** can mean **a book**. To say **the book**, attach **ה־** to the beginning: **הספר** | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | בית | A house | | הבית | The house | | ילדה | A girl | | הילדה | The girl | | ספרים | Books | | הספרים | The books | The prefix is usually pronounced **ha-**, although its vowel can vary in pointed Hebrew. **With a describing adjective, mark both words as definite:** - **ספר חדש** — a new book. - **הספר החדש** — the new book. - **מחברת חדשה** — a new notebook. - **המחברת החדשה** — the new notebook. Now compare a phrase with a complete statement: | Hebrew | Meaning | |---|---| | הספר החדש | The new book | | הספר חדש. | The book is new. | | הילדה הטובה | The good girl | | הילדה טובה. | The girl is good. | In the statement **הספר חדש**, the adjective tells you something about the book. It does not take **ה־**. ### 7. This, that, and these: first forms Begin with these three words: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Use | |---|---|---| | זה | ze | This, masculine singular | | זאת | zot | This, feminine singular | | אלה | **E**-le | These, plural | You will also hear **זו — zo**, another feminine form meaning “this.” Use them to identify something: - **זה ספר.** — This is a book. - **זאת מחברת.** — This is a notebook. - **אלה ספרים.** — These are books. - **אלה מחברות.** — These are notebooks. Match **זה** or **זאת** to the noun: - **זה שולחן.** — This is a table. - **זאת דלת.** — This is a door. You can add a description: **זה ספר חדש.** This is a new book. **זאת מחברת חדשה.** This is a new notebook. ### 8. Making a sentence negative Use **לא — lo**, “not.” - **אני לא מורה.** — I am not a teacher. - **הוא לא תלמיד.** — He is not a student. - **זה לא ספר.** — This is not a book. - **המחברת לא חדשה.** — The notebook is not new. Practice correcting an identification: **זה ספר?** Is this a book? **לא, זאת מחברת.** No, this is a notebook. Hebrew can form a yes/no question with the same word order as a statement. In speech, intonation helps signal the question; in writing, use a question mark. - **אתה תלמיד.** — You are a student. - **אתה תלמיד?** — Are you a student? ### 9. Asking questions Learn these common question words: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | מי | mi | Who | | מה | ma | What | | איפה | **EY**-fo | Where | | מתי | ma-**TAY** | When | | איך | eykh | How | | למה | **LA**-ma | Why | | כמה | **KA**-ma | How much; how many | | איזה | **EY**-ze | Which; what kind of — masculine | | איזו | **EY**-zo | Which; what kind of — feminine | | אילו | **EY**-lu | Which — plural | Use these patterns first: **מי זה?** Who is this? **זאת מאיה.** This is Maya. **מה זה?** What is this? **זה ספר.** This is a book. **איפה הספר?** Where is the book? **הספר פה.** The book is here. **איזה ספר?** Which book? **הספר החדש.** The new book. You already know **איך** in: **איך קוראים לך?** What is your name? Learn the other question words now as useful vocabulary. You will build more sentences with them as your grammar grows. ### 10. Four useful attached words Several very common Hebrew words attach directly to the following word. | Prefix | Basic meaning | Example | |---|---|---| | ו־ | And | דניאל ומאיה — Daniel and Maya | | ב־ | In; at | בבית — at home; in the house | | ל־ | To; for | למאיה — to Maya; for Maya | | מ־ | From | מישראל — from Israel | Pronunciations vary with the word and construction. Learn the examples as complete expressions. #### ו־ — and **ספר ומחברת** *SE-fer u-makh-BE-ret* A book and a notebook. The prefix often sounds like **ve-**, but in this example it sounds like **u-**. #### ב־ — in; at **אני בבית.** *a-NI ba-BA-yit.* I am at home. **הספר בתיק.** *ha-SE-fer ba-TIK.* The book is in the bag. #### ל־ — to; for **הספר למאיה.** *ha-SE-fer le-MA-ya.* The book is for Maya. #### מ־ — from **אני מישראל.** *a-NI mi-yis-ra-EL.* I am from Israel. **היא מאנגליה.** *hi me-AN-gli-ya.* She is from England. ### 11. Possession with של The word **של — shel** connects something with its owner. **הספר של מאיה.** The book is Maya’s. **הבית של דניאל.** The house is Daniel’s. For personal possession, learn: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | שלי | she-**LI** | My; mine | | שלך | shel-**KHA** | Your; yours — addressing a man | | שלך | she-**LAKH** | Your; yours — addressing a woman | | שלו | she-**LO** | His | | שלה | she-**LA** | Her; hers | | שלנו | she-**LA**-nu | Our; ours | | שלכם | she-la-**KHEM** | Your; yours — masculine plural | | שלכן | she-la-**KHEN** | Your; yours — feminine plural | | שלהם | she-la-**HEM** | Their; theirs — masculine | | שלהן | she-la-**HEN** | Their; theirs — feminine | Examples: - **הספר שלי** — my book. - **המחברת שלה** — her notebook. - **הבית שלנו** — our house. The possessive form follows the **owner**: - **הספר שלו** — his book. - **המחברת שלו** — his notebook. Both use **שלו** because the owner is male. To ask who owns something: **של מי הספר?** *shel mi ha-SE-fer?* Whose book is it? **הספר שלי.** The book is mine. ### 12. There is / there isn’t Use: - **יש — yesh:** there is; there are. - **אין — eyn:** there isn’t; there aren’t. Examples: **יש פה ספר.** There is a book here. **יש פה ספרים.** There are books here. **אין פה ספר.** There isn’t a book here. These forms work with both singular and plural nouns. ### 13. Saying “I have” Hebrew expresses possession using **יש** with a form meaning “to someone.” Learn: | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---| | יש לי | yesh li | I have | | יש לך | yesh le-**KHA** | You have — masculine singular | | יש לך | yesh lakh | You have — feminine singular | | יש לו | yesh lo | He has | | יש לה | yesh la | She has | | יש לנו | yesh **LA**-nu | We have | Examples: - **יש לי ספר.** — I have a book. - **יש לה מחברת.** — She has a notebook. - **יש לנו בית קטן.** — We have a small house. To make these negative, replace **יש** with **אין**: - **אין לי ספר.** — I do not have a book. - **אין לה מחברת.** — She does not have a notebook. - **אין לנו בית.** — We do not have a house. Ask a question using the same pattern: **יש לך ספר?** Do you have a book? Possible answers: **כן, יש לי ספר.** Yes, I have a book. **לא, אין לי ספר.** No, I do not have a book. ### 14. Your vocabulary bank Learn these words gradually. Use each one in a phrase or sentence. | Topic | Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning | |---|---|---|---| | Family | משפחה | mish-pa-**KHA** | Family | | Family | אבא | **A**-ba | Dad | | Family | אמא | **I**-ma | Mom | | Family | אח | akh | Brother | | Family | אחות | a-**KHOT** | Sister | | People | חבר | kha-**VER** | Male friend | | People | חברה | kha-ve-**RA** | Female friend | | Classroom | ספר | **SE**-fer | Book | | Classroom | מחברת | makh-**BE**-ret | Notebook | | Classroom | עט | et | Pen | | Classroom | תיק | tik | Bag | | Classroom | כיסא | ki-**SE** | Chair | | Classroom | שולחן | shul-**KHAN** | Table | | Place | בית | **BA**-yit | House; home | | Place | כיתה | ki-**TA** | Classroom; class | | Language | עברית | iv-**RIT** | Hebrew | | Language | אנגלית | an-**GLIT** | English | | Country | ישראל | yis-ra-**EL** | Israel | | Country | אנגליה | **AN**-gli-ya | England | **חבר** and **חברה** can also mean boyfriend and girlfriend in context. For now, practice their basic meanings as friends. #### First counting words Learn this common counting sequence: | Number | Hebrew | Pronunciation | |---|---|---| | 0 | אפס | **E**-fes | | 1 | אחת | a-**KHAT** | | 2 | שתיים | **SHTA**-yim | | 3 | שלוש | sha-**LOSH** | | 4 | ארבע | **AR**-ba | | 5 | חמש | kha-**MESH** | Hebrew has different number forms depending on grammatical gender.
